History

Palaghar district has golden historical heritage in Vasai,Palghar and Jawhar talukas. Vasai taluka was dominated by Portugij earlier. In the the days of Peshwa Empire, Chimajee Appa hoisted the Maratha flag in Vasai. In 1942 when ‘The Go Back Movement’ started in India for the freedom from British empire, to support this movement the great 5 martyr from Palghar sacrificed their life for the country.

Kashinath Hari Pagdhare of Saatpati, Govind Ganesh Thakur of Nandgaon, Ramachandra Bhimashankar Tiwari of Palghar, Ramchandra Mahadev churi of Murabe, Sukur Govind More of Shirgaon sacrificed their life for the independence from British Kingdom. In remembrance of their sacrifice a Martyr Square in the Palghar city was constructed and given the name as ‘Panch Batti’. When in the year 1930 ‘The Satyagraha Movement’ was started in the country, Many activists from Vadarai to Saatpati were also involved. At Saatapati all the foreign objects were completely banned and destroyed. In Jawhar the king named as Mukane had an independent rule, Even today in Jawhar his great Palace resembles as the witness of history.

About Palghar

The part of the country’s largest urban sea-hill of Thane District divisioned on 1st August 2014 or 36th new district Palghar came into existence. The working time of a new district in the presence of then Chief Minister and then Revenue Minister started from 1st August 2014. Palghar is the 36th district of the state. It is spreaded between the west coast of the Arabian Sea and the Sahyadri Mountains rows that are east of the Northern District of Palghar. Palghar DISTRICT total population is around 29,90,116. The district has a total of 8 talukas, Mokhada, Talasari, Vasai, Vikramgad, Palghar, Dahanu and Wada. Palghar DISTRICT has 4,69,699 hectares of the total geographical area in a total 1008 villages and 3818 sub-villages as well as 477 gram panchayats. In District the literacy rate is 66.65% and Male percentage is 72.23% and female literacy rate is 59.28%.

Cultural Heritage

In district primarily Warli, Katkari, Malhar fisherman etc. are tribal communities. The tribal caste cultural heritage is respected and Warli painting and tarpa dance is an identity of their social life. The primitive time when the man lived, from that time warli paintings are being preserved for lasts 1100 years. In this art the tribal customs, various activities and daily events that occur in daily life are shown. Marriage, dance and various events nature activities are shown perfectly. These pictures are made without use of any kind of chemical colors rather Substance from nature eg, soil, rice flour, plant colors and bamboo plant brush are used. This is the art of painting which depicts lifestyle tribal people and these paintings are in demand in India as well as abroad.
